H2 Port Infrastructure Study

Strengthening European Ports for Hydrogen-Fuelled Inland Shipping

The TSB - Transferstelle Bingen (Bingen technology transfer institute) conducts a feasibility study on hydrogen as an alternative fuel for inland waterway transport. The aim is to evaluate the existing infrastructure of hydrogen production, supply and storage in the ports of the Rhine-Alpine transport corridor. The study is conducted on behalf of the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Economics, Transport, Agriculture, and Viticulture and aims to provide recommendations for developing a port ecosystem conducive to hydrogen refuelling and storage technologies. The study will help stakeholders from politics, business, and society to drive forward the creation of an emission-free transport corridor within the EU. The research project was kicked off in March 2024 in Mainz, Germany with the participation from ports in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and France.

The project has started on 1 November 2023 and will last 24 months. The project is funded by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Economics, Transport, Agriculture, and Viticulture.
