Launch of the New Hydrogen-Powered Vessel H₂ Barge 2

Future Proof Shipping and ZEM Ports NS have launched the second inland cargo ship that will use hydrogen to transport goods on the Rhine between Rotterdam and Duisburg with zero emissions. The official launch took place on February 8 in the port of Werkendam near Rotterdam.

The ship, which used to be a conventionally powered container ship and previously sailed under the name FPS Waal, has been completely converted into a climate-neutral ship during the last year. It is now powered by PEM fuel cells, hydrogen storage, battery packs and an electric drivetrain installed below deck. The EU-funded project not only saves an estimated 3,000 tons of CO₂ per year but is also an important step towards an emission-free transport sector.

In May 2023, Future Proof Shipping had already launched the world's first hydrogen-powered inland vessel H2 Barge 1.
